Murdoch Mysteries – Would have and Would of

I was and suppose that I still am, a stickler for detail; after all, it was drummed into me when I was training as a Chartered Accountant.

You have to take some of Murdoch Mysteries with a pinch of salt but there is one thing that really gets my goat.

Some of the actors say “would have” and some say “would of“. It should be the former but standards in acting and detail have sadly slipped but, after all, Murdoch Mysteries is set in the very early 1900s.

I am sure that at times, I use the phrase “would of” but this is now and not then. Is it just the writers being lazy or is it the actors and actresses I wonder?

The devil, they say, is in the detail and if you are going to do something, do it right, rather than just fudge or be lazy. But fudging and being lazy seems to be the standard of the day, these days.
